Location
This walk starts from Constantia Nek Car Park. On sunny weekends, this car park can fill up quickly, so arrive early. Alternatively, you can get a short Uber from elsewhere in Cape Town.
Tips
- In summer, set off early as there is limited shade on this hiking route. Make sure to take snacks and enough water.
- There is some scrambling on this route, which involves some agility and a head for heights, but nothing too scary.

Camel Rock Loop Hiking Route

From the car park, head up the small paved road leading to the mountain. There’s a gate (closed to vehicles, always open for people) at the top, and on the other side, the road turns to dirt. This is known as the Jeep Track.
A few metres after the gate, you’ll see some stone steps leading up to the left. Take this path, which climbs steeply up the mountainside. You’ll come out on a dirt track. Turn left to the dirt turning circle and take the small path at the far end.

Continue along this path and keep right, ignoring the smaller trails off to the left. You’ll now be walking under some rocky cliffs, with views over Hout Bay and the ocean in the other direction. The path then bends right, heading to the top of the ridge. You then follow the ridge upwards, which involves some short scrambles.
Hiking to Camel Rock

Eventually you reach a flatter section. The path leads through the fynbos and to another short uphill section. You’re then on another plateau again, this one quite rocky. As you continue hiking, Camel Rock will come into view. As the name suggests, this is a rock that looks quite like a camel, though only from certain angles.
After Camel Rock, this hike continues along the small path until De Villiers Reservoir. At the reservoir, you can take one of the paths to the left to reach the water. Swimming is officially not allowed here, but many people take a dip anyway. At least, it’s a scenic spot to have a break.

When you’re ready, leave the water the way you came and continue to the track, which is the same Jeep Track as you started on. Head down the track, with views over greater Cape Town to your left. After almost 1 km, there’s a hairpin bend, and shortly after this you’ll see some steps leading down to the right. Take this small path.
This path leads you back to the track fairly near the beginning where you were previously. Continue across the track to the small path you walked up, and head down here. This will bring you back to the car park and the end of the Camel Rock Loop Hike.
