This easy but uphill walk near Mount Ceder leads to a great viewpoint over both the Cederberg and towards the Tankwa Karoo.

Location

This walk starts from a dirt car park by the side of the road at the top of Grootrivierhoogte Pass. This is a scenic dirt road on the eastern side of the Cederberg Mountains, south of Matjiesrivier Cape Nature Offices, and just north of Mount Ceder.

Tips

  • Mount Ceder* is very nearby and a great place to stay in the Cederberg. It also has a nice restaurant.
  • This hike can be windy, and the weather can change quickly in the mountains, so be prepared.
  • Useful for many hikes, get an offline hiking App such as Organic Maps.

Grootrivierhoogte Viewpoint Hiking Route

The route for this hike is very easy. From the dirt car park at Grootrivierhoogte, cross over the road and walk up the dirt track opposite. There are many wiggles in the track as it leads upwards, and the views get better and better.

The walking is all on an old dirt trac,k so quite easy, but it’s a bit rocky and steep at times. After roughly 1.75 km you’ll be at the viewpoint at the top. To the east, you can see across to the dry Tankwa Karoo, while in the other direction, you’ll see the rocks and mountains of the Cederberg. When you’re ready, follow the track back down the same way to the car park and the end of this hike.

Mount Ceder* is a wonderful place to stay on the eastern side of the Cederberg. There is a choice of various cottages with kitchens, all lovingly restored yet keeping their charming character. There are also a few glamping options with smaller kitchenettes. The on-site restaurant is great and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
