Location

The Milorho Lodge Hiking Trail starts from the main lodge in the reserve. However, you can also start from the campsite or from the cottages. It’s 1hr20 from Pretoria, and 2hrs from Johannesburg.

Tips

  • The best way to do this hike is to stay at Milorho Lodge*. There are five lovely self-catering cottages for 2-6 people, plus a campsite.
  • For day visitors, the hiking trail is open every day from 7am to 4:30pm and it’s R120/60 per adult/child.
  • If 12 km sounds too long, there’s also an 8 km and 4.5 km hike at Milhorho Lodge.
  • Although the Milorho Lodge Trail isn’t on the map, an offline hiking App such as Organic Maps is still useful so you don’t get completely lost.
  • For other hikes in the Magaliesberg, check out the nearby Kumbagana Game Reserve Hike or the easy Peglarae Trail in Kgaswane Nature Reserve. Find even more hikes in our South Africa Hiking Guide.

Milorho Lodge Hiking Route

Turn left when leaving the lodge towards the track. Follow it a short distance upwards to a junction of several tracks. Turn left and almost immediately, you’ll see a sign for the hiking trail leading through the scrub to your right. The hike described here is the green hike, so you’re looking out for the green symbols. The shorter hike is brown, but follows the same route at the start.

In roughly 150 metre,s you’ll reach another track, with the campsite to the left. To continue on the hike, head straight across. Soon, you’ll reach a small path junction where you head straight onwards. The path to your left comes directly from the campsite, so if you’re camping, you would join the main trail here.

A little further along the hike, you descend into a little ravine with some water at most times of year. The path then leaves the ravine and continues to head upwards.

You’ll pass through an area of cool rocks before reaching the highest point on the walk. This section is grassy with good views over the rest of the area. Heading downwards, you bend your way through the fun area of rocks before bending again to walk through the boulders once more.

When you’re almost at the bottom of the reserve, you’ll see some pools and a stream on your left. You can swim here, and it’s a rather beautiful place.

After leaving the stream, the hiking route continues to the fence at the bottom of the Milorho Lodge area. After walking around a fruit plantation, you’ll reach the main track. Turn right to return to the lodge and the end of this hike.

We camped at Milorho Lodge, which also has several cute self-catering cottages*. It’s a great place to base yourself for hiking in the Magaliesberg, and it’s also very close to Magalies Canopy Tours if you want to zipline between the trees!
