Paarl Domes Hike Map
Location
This walk starts in Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve, from the main car park at the base of the Botanical Gardens. You’ll find a large picnic site and toilets here. The drive here is partly along a dirt road with a few potholes in places, though it’s suitable for all cars. It takes roughly 1 hour to drive here from the centre of Cape Town. You can do it as a day trip, or stay at one of the lovely wine farms nearby, such as the conveniently located Laborie Estate*.
Tips
- Entry to Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve is free on weekdays, but R36 per person plus R30 per car on weekends and public holidays.
- The reserve is open from 7 am year-round.
- You can buy a map of the hiking trails for R40 (from the main gate on weekends, or from Paarl tourist office on weekdays).
- This walk is fairly easy, apart from walking up the granite domes themselves, which requires grippy shoes and a head for heights.
- The rocks can be slippery when wet, so it’s best to do this walk on a dry day.
- Useful for many hikes, get an offline hiking App such as Organic Maps.
- Make a weekend of it and stay nearby at Laborie Estate*.

Paarl Domes Hiking Route

From the car park at the base of the Botanical Gardens, head upwards and out of the far end. This takes you past the toilets and picnic site, then you’ll see a hiking signpost pointing to the path. This path leads through some scrub, then out onto some bare rock.
The rock that makes up Paarl Domes is granite, and it’s quite grippy, so you can walk straight up it without slipping. However, bear in mind it can be slippery when wet. The first rock dome you climb up on this hike is Paarl Rock. It can be slightly hard to see the trail as it goes over bare rock, but you basically just head to the very top.

There’s a white trig point at the top, and from here there’s a great view over Paarl Valley and to the mountains beyond. You’ll also find some cool boulders perched on the granite blob, looking as if they might roll down the hill anyday!
In the opposite direction to the valley, you can see two more rock blobs, or granite domes. These are Bretagne Rock on the left and Gordon’s Rock on the right. Walk down off Paarl Rock in their direction, towards the track below. Then head up the track until it ends in a small dirt car park.
Walking up Bretagne Rock

From here, continue along the small path. Soon, there’s a turnoff to the left, up Bretagne Rock. Take this turn off and walk to the top of this huge rock slab. Nearer the top, it gets a bit steep, but there are chains to hold onto. The very top is flat, and again, there are super good views over the valleys and mountains of the Cape Winelands.
When you’re ready, head off the rock and back down to the path below. There’s no easy way up Gordon’s Rock opposite, so just admire it from afar. At the bottom, between the two rocks, turn left and into the small forest. You’ll soon reach a boardwalk of steps leading a long way downwards. The path then continues for a short distance until reaching a small track.
Hiking into the more Remote Region

Continue along this track, following it first straight, and then bending left, right and left again. At the next large junction, you’ll reach Xmas Camp, a picnic and braai area. Turn right here, down the track towards one of the reservoirs. In about 1 km, take the smaller track up to the left, then at the junction shortly after, turn left again.
Keep following this track until you reach a T-Junction. Turn right here and up through some rocks. Continues onwards as the track bends around the outside of Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve and back towards the town side.

After passing the red and white tower on your left, the track then turns left. Shortly after the bend, take the smaller track to the left, leading along a flat ridge. When you reach some rocks, the route continues as a smaller path through the vegetation. This leads all the way down to a stream. The path turns left before the stream and steeply down to one of the main tracks.
Once on the main track, turn right, and it’s roughly 700 metres back to the car park and the end of the Paarl Domes Hike. Have a picnic or braai, or if you have the energy, walk further and explore the Botanical Gardens.
