Tips
- This hike is only allowed in August and September. The Postberg Flower Hike is a similar, but longer, two-day hike here.
- You must book in advance (bookings open in June). Since numbers are limited, the weekends sell out almost straight away. Phone the Geelbek Visitor Centre (022 707 9902/3) for more information.
- Take: permit, WildCard (or pay the park entrance fees), sunhat and sunscreen, and plenty of water.
- Organic Maps (the phone app similar to Google Maps but offline and with most paths) was useful on this hike
- Remember your swimming stuff – it was a bit cold on the ocean side, but swimming in the lagoon is lovely!
- Bring a flower guidebook* if you have one
- Find accommodation nearby* for the night before or night after the hike
- Discover more things to do in our Guide to West Coast National Park or our South Africa Hiking Guide.
Steenberg Flower Hiking Route

After checking in at Tsaarsbank Gate, walk through the gate and take the small path heading out to the right from the small dirt car park. Already, you will see many spring flowers, and potentially antelopes, zebras, tortoises and other wildlife.
Continue on this path as it bends left, crosses a track, and leads further through the grassy area. A while later, the hiking trail crosses another track and starts climbing uphill.

At the top is a bit of a plateau, with great views of the ocean. Heading further, there are many more flowers and you can probably see antelope grazing. After crossing straight over another track (used by vehicles on the flower drive), the path leads to some more rocks and a great viewpoint.
Walking to the Beaches

At the next track, turn left. You now have to walk along this track for a short distance, so watch out for the cars. At the next junction, head straight across and back onto a small hiking trail. This crosses a few more small tracks before reaching a gorgeous beach. Head down a short path to the beach, with cool boulders and a pleasing crescent shape. Take a rest and enjoy the ocean before returning to the trail.

The path continues over to another beach, Plankiesbaai. This is also nice, but is much busier as there’s a car park just above it. You can walk along the sand, or at high tide, it’s easiest to walk on the little path through the vegetation just behind the beach. When you reach the track, turn right.
Heading Back
Continue on the small track as it bends around the hilly headland. Between two hills, look out for the small path on the left. Leave the track and take this small path, which heads inland, then eventually bends back towards another beach.

Turn left along the beach to reach Tsaarsbank Picnic Spot. From here, it’s left along the track back to Tsaarsbank Gate where you started. This is the end of the Steenberg Flower Hike.
