Barmstein Panoramic Hike

This easy walk near Slazburg is a great hike, with views of the Barmstein rocks, mountains, countryside and more.

Location

This hike starts from a large, free car park opposite the brewery Hofbräu Kaltenhausen (incidentally, a great place for a refreshment break after the hike!). It’s 20 minutes drive from Salzburg, or you can very easily reach the brewery on a direct bus taking 30 minutes (and running every 30 minutes).

Tips

  • This hike is fairly easy and doesn’t include climbing the Großer Barmstein or Kleiner Barmstein rock plateaus. To hike up these, it’s more difficult as it involves some very steep and slightly rocky/slippery sections. If you’re experienced with hiking in the mountains, it’s not super challenging, but avoid attempting it when it’s wet.

Barmstein Panoramic Hiking Route

Barmstein Rocks

Cross over the road from the car park and turn right in front of the brewery. Take a left behind the small wooden-roofed car park and continue along the path into the woods. When you reach a track, follow it left and around a bend. Immediately after the bend, look out for the signed path on the left – this can be easy to miss!

Keep following the path up through the forest and turn left when you meet a path junction. Soon you’ll see an option to climb up Großer Barmstein heading off to your left. If you’re an experienced walker, you could do this. If not, continue along the easy path.

Meadows with Views

It’s now flatter, and in a short distance, the path leading up Kleiner Barmstein heads off to the left. If you’re not climbing this, continue onwards until you reach the open. From this lovely meadow, there are great views.

At the corner of the track, turn right along the forest’s edge. Walk along here until you pass through a few trees and reach another path. Turn left and the path leads into some open fields and a small collection of buildings. There are more great views from here.

Turn right through the buildings and fields. When you reach the edge of the woods again, the path zigzags upwards. At the junction, keep left to contour around a small hill. This path leads around to the top of a wooded ridge. This is the border between Austria (right) and Germany (left), and you’ve actually been walking in Germany for a while!

Walking along the Ridge

The path now follows the ridge for just over 1.5 km before bending down to the right. After the steep section, you’ll reach a path junction. Turn left and you’ll soon be walking through a large meadow. This meadow is sometimes used for shooting practice, so make sure to stick to the path and not wander off it.

At the building at the far end of the open area, follow the path left back into the forest. This goes downwards, then bends right. Keep to the path on the right just before an open area. You’ll walk past a little chapel, then along the top of some fields with lovely views. Soon you’ll get to a small road. Turn left and follow the road as it leads you all the way back to the brewery and the end of the Barmstein Panoramic Hike.
