Location

This walk to see the Megaliths starts in the centre of Wéris by the Maison des Mégalithes de Wéris. There’s a small, free car park on the street opposite, or more parking further up the hill.

Tips

  • It’s best to visit the Maison des Mégalithes de Wéris museum first, before this walk, as it explains the history of the monuments. This means you understand what you’re seeing when you get there – there aren’t any explanation signs at the rocks themselves.
  • The museum has a small fee to get in, but it’s free to walk around the megaliths.
  • The museum also has a cafe and there are several other cute cafes and restaurants nearby.
  • Find other walks and hikes in the nearby Netherlands.

From the centre of Wéris, head past the museum and take the first left down the small street. You’ll first notice a cute little building – an old bread oven. Continue upwards around the corner and you’ll see the town church on your left.

Turn left at the road, around the church, then head right at the T-junction. Keep walking along this road as it heads out of town. One of the last buildings you see, on your right, is the distinctive La Maison de Hary Cot. Formerly a restaurant, it’s now an AirBnb!

About 500 metres later you’ll see the first of the impressive Wéris Megaliths on your left. This site is known as The Dolmen of Wéris, a dolmen being a single-chamber tomb made out of megaliths (large rocks). These graves are roughly 5000 years old and were reused several times – you can find out much more in the museum.

After you’ve wondered at this megalith, it’s time to continue onwards down the small side road. Almost 1 km later, there’s a short fenced out-and-back to another collection of rocks. Many of these megaliths were exhumed recently, in 2019, and only in 2023 have some of them been erected to stand tall. The sign at this location tells you the history of these megaliths, both in ancient times and of the recent excavation works.

Back on the main trail, continue onwards and across the road. Soon you’ll see another short out and back to the Dolmen of Oppagne, another grand megalith tomb. This monument is in a shallow hollow between several trees, making it quite an evocative sight,

Return to the track and continue slightly uphill. At the junction, this walk now heads left, back towards Wéris. After the road crossing, look out for a path to the right cutting across a field. Follow this and it will take you back to Wéris town and the end of this megaliths walk.
