Volcanic Ridge Hike near Clermont-Ferrand

By Vicky · Published Sep. 23rd, 2025

This beautiful out-and-back walk along an old volcanic ridge leads to Puy de l’Angle and is very scenic all the way.

Location

This walk up and along the Volcanic Ridge to Puy de l’Angle starts from a large, free car park at the highest point along a small road through the hills.

Tips

  • The Buron du Col de la Croix Morand restaurant at the start/end of this walk is a great place to grab a drink or snack, with delicious crepes and waffles!
  • There’s no shade on this hike, so remember sunscreen and a sunhat. However, it can be very windy, so make sure your sunhat is secured!
  • There’s a public toilet in the car park, nowhere else on this hike is suitable for a look break!

From the car park, head along the path between the two small buildings. The route is initially fenced on both sides, and there may be cows in the fields. The path is fairly obvious here, as it’s quite popular to hike at least to the first peak, Puy de la Tache.

This first section also has most (butn ot all) of the climb. At the top of Puy de la Tache, there are really great views. You can see in all directions, including along the scenic volcanic ridge where this hike continues.

Next up is a small section of downhill, followed by a rise again towards the next peak, Puy de Monne. The main trail continues just to the left of the peak itself, contouring along before heading slightly upwards again to Puy du Barbier.

From here, it’s an easy walk to Puy de l’Angle, the far end of this hike and the highest point along the volcanic ridge. The top makes a great place to stop for a picnic, though it can be windy, so you might want to sit a bit down one side of the very top.

After enjoying the views, return the way you came. Even though it’s the same route, the views are different heading this way and it’s still very enjoyable. When you return to the car park, and the end of the Volcanic Ridge Hike, consider grabbing a snack at the Buron du Col de la Croix Morand restaurant. If it’s warm, take a swim in the nearby Lac de Chambon, from where you can see the ridge you just walked along.
