The easy walk around Grüntensee is full of flowers in Spring and Summer, with views across the lake and places for swimming.

Location

The walk around Grüntensee Lake starts from a car park on the western side of the lake, just by the highway. It’s about 1.5-2 hours drive from Munich, or 30 minutes from Füssen or Oberstdorf.

  • You’ll find refreshments at the campsite about halfway around this walk and by the Kletterwald (climbing forest) roughly two-thirds of the way around.
  • You can swim in the Grüntensee Lake, with a beach near the campsite.
  • This walk is pram-friendly, though there’s a short section of woodchips at the beginning, which is easiest with a sturdy pram.

Grüntensee Lake Walking Route

We walked around Grüntensee anti-clockwise, though it doesn’t really matter which way around you walk. To go anti-clockwise, head to the right when facing the lake. The path is clear and well-marked all the way around. There aren’t too many route choices, you just stick to the path closest to the water’s edge.

At the beginning, there’s a section of woodland to walk through, before you reach some beautiful meadows full of colourful flowers. In the distance you can see the Alps, and some lovely green foothills closer by. After about 1km you’ll get your first real views of Grüntensee Lake.

Continuing onwards you’ll pass through more fields covered in flowers before crossing over a little bridge in some woodland. Turn left on the other side to walk along a little stream towards the lake. Soon you’ll reach Camping Grüntensee, on the lakeshore. There’s a beach and a little jetty here for swimming, along with a restaurant.

Past the campsite and through some forest, you return to the edge of the water. Note the tree trunks partially eaten by beavers, though you’ll be very lucky if you actually see a beaver! At the end of the inlet, you’ll find a dam. There’s a short steep section to get to the top before you turn left. There are good views from here, along with lots of flowers.

On the other side, turn right up the road and you’ll get to the Kletterwald (Climbing Forest) and another restaurant. There’s another spot for swimming or sunbathing here, to the right of the Climbing Forest. Keep to the lakeshore, and turn left at the junction. This leads straight back to the car park and the end of the Grüntensee Lake walk.
