Barolo Vineyards Walking Route

Castle in Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
Walking in the vineyards around Barolo

From the car park in the centre of Barolo, first head up towards the castle and look around. You can walk into the courtyard behind, where there are a couple of restaurants, or visit the Wine Museum inside. Though this might be something to do after the walk!

Leave the castle along the main straight through Barolo, lined by little shops selling local produce. When you reach the end of the square, turn left, following the brown hiking sign. Turn left at the road at the bottom until you reach the picnic area.

Leave the road to the right here, but then take the first left which zigzags up the forested hillside. You’ll soon come out into the Barolo vineyards at the top. The route now leads along the gentle hills through the beautiful countryside, with great views all around.

Keep on following the hiking signs towards Monforte d’Alba. When you reach a small road, turn right and begin the out-and-back section towards the cute town. Just before the town you have to walk on the edge of a main road for a short distance.

Monforte d’Alba

Monforte d'Alba, a cute town in the Alba region of Piedmont

Once in Monforte d’Alba take some time to explore the town. You can first make a small loop to the right to see the church and visit a great bakery – Panetteria Viberti. This shop has all kinds of delicious goodies for extremely reasonable prices. We regretted not buying more!

Now it’s time for some fairly steep uphill as you explore the older part of town. Head up the hill along the cute little streets to the old buildings and piazza at the top. You can walk a short loop around the road circling the castello, but you can’t see much.

Novello, a town in the wine region of Barolo

Once on the front side of the castello, head into the car park a short distance as there are good views from here back to town. When you’re ready, make your way back down the hill. Leave town the way you came and take the right off the main road.

Novello

When you reach the junction at the saddle, take the left down the hill. Now look out for the hiking signs pointing towards Novello. You’ll head across the valley and right before reaching a road. Turn left here, then in a little while you can take a left again off the road to walk along a track slightly lower, but parallel.

Soon you’ll reach the town of Novello at the top of the hill. This town also has a castello, though you can only look at it through the gates as it’s a private venue. Look around town and leave along the main road. Continue on this road, but shortly before where you joined the road earlier, take a left.

You’ll see Barolo now on the hiking signs and it’s not too far now until you reach the end of the walk. After walking through more vineyards the track bends right and you’ll reach the road heading up through the centre of Barolo. Now’s a great time to have some ice cream, lunch, or buy some of that famous Barolo wine! This is the end of the Barolo vineyards walk.
