This beautiful yet fairly easy hike from Foscagno Pass leads you around a mountain, down a lovely valley and back through woodland.

Location

This hike starts from a free car park at the top of Foscagno Pass in Stelvio National Park. It’s roughly 30 minutes drive from Bormio, or 45 minutes on a direct bus. There are picnic tables at the car park, which is next to a lovely lake.

Tips

  • Stelvio National Park is called Nationalpark Stilfserjoch in German, and often you’ll see this on the signs as the region is partly German-speaking.
  • The hotel opposite the car park is the only place for refreshments nearby – it’s fairly well priced with some nice outdoor seating.
  • For other nearby hikes, check out the hike to Rifugio Pizzini or the easy walk up Val Zebrù. Or for more walks and hikes, check out our Italy Hiking Page.

Foscagno Pass Hiking Route

From the car park, walk along the track by the lake and below the road. At the far end of the lake, there’s no clear path, but make your way up the grassy slope to walk along the edge of the road.

At the small collection of buildings, which is some sort of old customs post, cross to the right-hand side of the road and take the path to the left of the final building. Very soon, there’s one zigzag leading up to the path above – take this path. At the fairly flat path above, turn left.

This path now leads gently up the mountainslope. Turn right at the junction by the pond to keep walking upwards. Soon, the path bends right and starts heading more steeply up the slope. Eventually, you’ll round the end of the mountain above, Monte Rocca. This is the highest point of the hike.

The route continues onwards, now heading slightly downhill to reach Lago Nero (Black Lake). This is a very pleasant place to have a break if you haven’t had one already. Keep walking past the lake in the same direction, over the short grass. Now begins the main section of descent, as you head all the way down to the valley floor you can see far below.

Walking down the Valley

After crossing the stream at the bottom of the valley, take a right at the path junction. This leads you along the pretty stream. Soon you’ll see a small collection of buildings in the distance. When you reach them, the path turns into a larger track. This bends around a gorgeous section of the valley and continues downwards.

After a while, you’ll get to a track junction in front of a barn, with many hiking signs. Take the sharp right here to cross over the river below, then turn left along the track on the other side. Almost 500 metres after this junction, at the end of an open area, take the path to the right that leads off from the main track. This leads you into the forest.

The path now contours around the hillside through the trees before returning to the open, from which you can see the road over Foscagno Pass. In the middle of the open, you’ll reach a track. Turn right here for a last short section of uphill. At the top, you’ll reach the road, the hotel, and the car park. This is the end of the Foscagno Pass Hike.
