This great hike takes you up Monteròdes Peak, an easy mountain summit, before heading over to an Alm and then back up the valley.
Monteròdes Peak Hiking Map
Location
This walk starts from the main car park in Schlinig Village (€8 per day). It’s a 15-minute drive up the valley from the main highway in the much larger Vinschgau/Venosta Valley below. Alternatively, there’s a bus every hour from Burgeis or Mals, two towns also in Vinschgau/Venosta Valley.
Tips
- There’s an Alm on this hike serving food and drink, plus several cafes and restaurants in Schlinig Village.
- Instead of driving here for one day, why not stay overnight in the village*? It saves on parking and there’s another great hike on the opposite side of the valley for the following day.

Monteròdes Peak Hiking Route

Leave the car park on the opposite side from Schlinig Village, over the bridge, and then left through the gate onto the track. Pass through another gate on the track, into a field, and take the smaller path leading off to the right.
Follow this up through the trees, into the open again, and upwards to another track. Walk up the track, then at the corner, take the path signposted to the right. This path, which becomes a track again, leads fairly steeply upwards through the forest.

At the treeline, the track bends left towards a small hut. At the hut, the path bends right again, continuing uphill. There are now really great views from this section of the hike, and you can see Monteròdes Peak in the distance.
Hiking to Monteròdes Peak

Continue onwards until you reach a little saddle and two small ponds. There’s now a short out-and-back, about 600 metres with 50 metres uphill, to the top of Monteròdes Peak, from where there are excellent views over Vinschgau/Venosta Valley and the surrounding mountains.
When you’re ready, return to the saddle and take the path heading downwards to the valley on the left. The path bends and descends to the valley floor, crossing over a stream. Turn left down the track.
Walking down past the Alms

At the small Schleiser Alm (in mid-summer, you can buy Alpine cheese here), take the path around the Alm rather than the track. This path continues through the fields to the large Laatscher Alm, roughly 1 km further down the valley. This is a lovely Alm that serves food and drink during the summer months.
From the Alm, continue down the track. When you reach the main track in the valley, turn right. After about 700 metres, you can take a path to the right to walk on the other side of the stream. This parallels the track for a while, before you cross over the stream again and continue downwards on another track.

Once you reach another track, follow it down one bend and then take the path to the left through the flower meadows. This brings you around the corner and back into the woods again. You’ll then be back in the valley you drove up and can see the road above you. Keep on walking upwards by the stream, and you’ll be walking on some small lanes.
Follow the signs upwards and back into Schlinig Village. Walk around the streets a bit – there are several cafes and restaurants for refreshments, and a nice local jam etc. shop. At the top end of the village is the car park, and the end of the Monteròdes Peak Hike.
Check out the Sesvenna Hut Loop Hike on the other side of the valley, or for more walks and hikes, see our Italy Hiking Page.
