This fairly easy, yet lovely and scenic loop hike to Sesvenna has great views, a lake, a waterfall and a pleasant hut.

Location

This walk starts from the main car park in Schlinig Village (€8 per day). It’s a 15-minute drive up the valley from the main highway in the much larger Vinschgau/Venosta Valley below. Alternatively, there’s a bus every hour from Burgeis or Mals, two towns also in Vinschgau/Venosta Valley.

Tips

Sesvenna Hut Loop Hiking Route

From the car park, leave via the entrance and follow the road opposite, then turn left on a track leading through the fields. Walk through the gate into the field and turn left to walk around the lower edge of the field.

Just before a ditch, take the path leading upwards to the right. The path heads into the trees and climbs quite steeply up the forested hillside. This is definitely the steepest and most difficult part of the hike! After a few final zigzags, you’ll reach the open land.

The path is still upwards, and you reach another fence and a signpost at a flat path. Ignore this path, and keep heading upwards. After some more bends, you’ll reach a larger, flat path. Now you’ve done most (but not all) of the climb. Turn left to follow this lovely trail as it contours along the hillside with great views over the valley below.

This is perhaps the best part of the walk, as it’s mainly flat, then slightly downhill for the next 4 km. The path is clear and easy, and the views are fantastic. Soon you’ll see Sesvenna Hut and the little lake next to it. Continue on the path on the hillside above the lake, and it descends to the track through the valley.

Turn left here. The Sesvenna Hut closed in 2025 for renovations; it’s currently unknown when it will open again. But don’t worry, there’s another hut further down the valley that serves food and drink. Stop at the Sesvenna Hut if it’s open, or have a break at the lake. You can technically swim here, but it remains fairly cold, so paddling might be more appealing.

When you’re ready, continue down the track. This leads you past a tall waterfall, the Schwarzwand-Wasserfall Schlinig in German, or Cascata di Slingia in Italian. There’s one route choice on the way down: you can continue on the main track to get very close to the waterfall, or take the smaller path on the left that leads along the valley sides, which has great waterfall views.

Either route is fine, and they both meet up again soon, a bit further down the valley. You’ll soon reach Schliniger Alm, a popular place for hikers. It’s also often busy with young families, as you can push a pram/stroller here from the car park in Schlinig Village.

From the hut, keep walking down the main track. Take a left on the track before the river to walk through the wildflower meadows. It’s just over 2 km down the track from the hut to Schlinig Village, the car park, and the end of the Sesvenna Hut Loop Hike.
