This out-and-back hike up Val Zebrù is a lovely, easy walk with great views and several mountain huts at the far point.
Val Zebrù Hiking Map
Location
This hike starts from a car park at the end of a road partly up Val Zebrù. It’s roughly 15 minutes by car from Bormio, or via public transport, you can take two buses (or one direct bus early, before 7am).
Tips
- There’s a cafe/bar in the car park open from 8am, serving coffee and more.
- Stelvio National Park is called Nationalpark Stilfserjoch in German, and often you’ll see this on the signs as the region is partly German-speaking.
- This hike passes a couple of scenic picnic areas, plus reaches several mountain huts serving food at the far point.
- For other nearby hikes, check out the walk to Rifugio Pizzini or the hike from Foscagno Pass. Or for more walks and hikes, check out our Italy Hiking Page.
Val Zebrù Hiking Route

From the car park, head along the wide track into the valley. Cross over the river and turn left on the other side. There’s a mix of walking through the forest and open areas next to the river. You get good views of the super steep mountains towering above on the other side.
The track crosses a bridge and then makes a sharp bend. Instead of following the track, take the right at the bend to follow along by the river. At the next junction, turn left up the track and past the house in the meadow.

At the track junction higher up, turn right to walk along the top of a lovely Alpine meadow. In the next meadow, you’ll find a scenic picnic area on your left. Head onwards, and always gradually upwards. The valley gets a bit wider and there are a couple of buildings, as well as lots of beautiful wildflowers.
The Far Point of the Val Zebrù Hike

Cross over the bridge, and the first building on your right is the Ristoro La Baita – Val Zebrù. This is the first option for food and drink near the endpoint of this hike. It has outdoor plus cosy indoor seating and several homemade cakes.
Almost 500 metres further, you’ll find Rifugio Campo, another place to get refreshments. There’s also homemade cakes on offer, so it’s hard to choose between the two options!

We hiked a few hundred meters further on from Rifugio Campo, just around the corner for a final view, before returning the way we came. For a much longer circular hike, you can take the path heading uphill to the right a short distance after Rifugio Campo. This would have an extra 450 metres of climb. Alternatively, you could wander further up the track along the valley floor until you decide to return.
The way back is the same, so it’s not difficult to find the route. It’s quite a lot quicker since it’s downhill and you’ve already seen the landscape. In no time, you’ll be back at the car park and the end of the Val Zebrù Hike.
