Location

This walk starts from the paid car park at the far end of Zufrittsee. It’s €2 per hour or €7 for the day. Alternatively, you can get a bus from the main Vinschgau/Venosta Valley, changing in Ganda, a village halfway up the side valley.

Tips

  • Stelvio National Park is called Nationalpark Stilfserjoch in German, and often you’ll see this on the signs as the region is partly German-speaking.
  • Instead of driving here for one day, why not stay overnight in Martelltal*? You can then easily do the great hike at the end of the valley, or walk up an easy peak nearby.
  • This walk around Zufrittsee is suitable for off-road prams/strollers, though it does involve guiding the pram down a slightly steep rocky path near the far end. You could always return before this.

Zufrittsee Lake Walking Route

From the car park, head towards the lake and right on the road leading past the hotel. This leads downwards past some public toilets and a llama to a gravel area by the lake. Turn right, following the hiking signs, as the track leads into and through the trees.

This track then continues close to the edge of the lake through a mix of forest and open meadows, with some gentle ups and downs. After about 2.5 km from the start, the track becomes a boardwalk, and then a slightly rocky, smaller path leads downhill.

At the bottom of the path, turn left to walk across Zufrittsee Lake dam. This dam and reservoir supply the region with both hydropower and water for all the fruits grown in the valley below.

On the other side of the dam, you have a choice: You can either return the way you came or walk along the road back to the car park. If it’s not too busy, it’s quite nice to make a loop and walk along the road. However, on sunny summer days the road can be veyr crowded with cars, in which case it’s best to return the same way.
