Loulé Walking Tour Route
1. Loulé Municipal Market

Loulé Municipal Market is one of the main attractions in town, housed in a distinctive building with Neo-Arab architecture. The stalls sell a wide variety of fresh produce, regional delicacies, artisanal crafts and more. The market’s open 7am-3pm every day apart from Sunday when it’s closed. On Saturdays, the market is at its liveliest, with an additional farmers’ market spilling out onto the surrounding streets.
Directions: After walking around the market and the adjacent streets, return to the main road. Turn left, passing the grand Town Hall, to the open square on your left. This is the courtyard of the Convent.
2. Espirito Santo Convent

The Espirito Santo Convent is no longer a convent, but now serves as a cultural centre and private high school. You can wander through the courtyard and cloisters, then walk through a little tunnel to exit on the other side.
Directions: When you reach the street, turn right and follow the cute small lane to the right.
3. Loulé Castle

Loulé Castle (open weekdays, 10 am–1:30 pm and 2:30–6 pm) is one of the top sights in town. For a couple of euros, you can enter the castle, wander around the ruins, visit the small exhibition and climb up the tower for great views. The outside of the castle actually looks most impressive from the other side, where this walking tour goes later.
Directions: Keep walking along the lane, and just before the main road, you’ll see a small church on your right.
4. Nossa Sehora da Conceicao Hermitage

Nossa Sehora da Conceicao Hermitage is a good surprise! Inside, the chapel walls are almost entirely covered by traditional blue and white tiles (azulejos) from the 18th century. You can also find a very detailed woodcut altar covered in gold.
Directions: Continue to the main road and turn left to the junction. Cross over, and head down the small lane next to the pink building. You’ll soon come out on San Francisco Square.
5. San Francisco Church

San Francisco Church is a nice building on a peaceful square in Loulé. Inside, there are many gold-adorned carvings, and the outside has nice lighting at night.
Directions: Head down the main street towards Loulé castle. You can see the defensive walls well from this side. Turn right, then take the first left uphill, passing a nice fountain. At the next corner, follow the street to the right to the entrance of the Baths.
6. Islamic Baths

The Islamic Baths (free entry, open Tue-Sun, 10 am–12:30 pm and 1:30–6 pm) is now a museum. It’s well worth it to take a look inside; the exhibition is done very well. You can see the ruins/foundations of a former Islamic Baths, plus great reconstructions of what it would have been like, with several artefacts found nearby and informative panels giving explanations. It’s quite small, but you could easily spend an hour here.
Directions: Continue along the lane by the museum, then take the first left and follow this road as it bends right. This will lead you to the obvious church.
7. Main Church

The Main Church in Loulé, Igreja Matriz de São Clemente, is a lovely old church built on the remains of a former mosque. The minaret was even converted into the bell tower. Since its construction in the 13th century, it has undergone several renovations, mainly due to damage from earthquakes.
Directions: After seeing the church, cross over to the gardens opposite.
8. Amuados Garden

Amuados Garden is a very peaceful place, and also a good viewpoint over the rest of Loulé and beyond.
Directions: From the church, walk downhill through the stone gate. Turn left at the road, then take the second left up past the hospital. Then take the first right down a cobbled street, and you’ll see the Portal of Conveto da Graca Church (the gate of a very old church) on the other side of the car park. Most of this convent was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake.
Turn left to walk to the main street through Loulé, a shady avenue with trees up the centre. Turn left again and you’ll get back to the Market and the end of the Loulé Walking Tour.
