The Mont Fóia Trail Hike starts at the highest point in the Algarve in the Monchique Mountains and has great views all around.
Mont Fóia Trail Hiking Map
Location
This hike starts from a car park at the top of Mont Fóia.
Tips
- There’s a snack bar by the car park in the main building at the top, and a little food truck called Alecrim below the viewpoint. If both are open, the food truck has a better location and nicer food.
- Take lots of water on the walk, especially if it’s hot, as there’s shade only along part of this hiking route.

Mont Fóia Trail Hiking Route
From the car park at the top of Mont Fóia, head to the viewpoint and scramble up the rocky mound next door for another viewpoint. Then continue along the small paved road towards the towers with satellite dishes.

Ignore the dirt track to the right, but at the junction just afterwards, take the paved lane to the right. This becomes a track and zigzags down the mountain and into some forest. After a descent through the trees, you’ll come out on the paved road. Turn left and walk along here for about 600 metres.

Around the bend, take the smaller lane leading up to the left. The lane zigzags up to Foia Mountain Lodge, then continues as a dirt track. This is a really lovely part of the hike as it takes you through the countryside and fields with great views. Head straight across a track to continue contouring around the mountain.

After a while, you’ll reach a larger track, part of the GR13 (a long European hiking route). Turn left up the hill. The scenery becomes wilder as you reach the more gentle plateau near the top of Mont Fóia. Keep on following the main track and it will bring you back to the car park and the end of the Mont Fóia Trail Hike.
