The hike up Golica Peak (Kahlkogel in German) is a relatively easy walk to the top, with fantastic views and daffodils in mid-May to mid-June.
Golica Peak Hiking Map
Location
The hike up Golica starts from a small, free car park in the woods up the valley from Jesenice. It’s about 1 hour’s drive from Ljubljana, on the way towards Austria and Germany.
Tips
- There’s one hut on this hike, Koča na Golici, which serves food and drink. It’s open every day May-Oct, and on sunny weekends the rest of the year.
- If you’re a little too early for the daffodils on the mountain, you might find some lower down in the valley on the drive up to the car park.
- For another walk with flowers, walk through Velika Planina. Another relatively easy hike is the walk up beautiful Logar Valley.

Golica Peak Hiking Route

From the car park, walk along the track that continues where the paved road ends. After almost 500 metres, turn left across the bridge and follow the path to the right as it heads steeply up the wooden slope. You might see a small waterfall, Slap Basar, in a stream to your right but it’s not very obvious.
Keep heaidng upwards and you’ll reach a forest track. Turn left here, then take the path up to the right, which leads to another track. You’ll notice the lower end of an aerial ropeway that carries goods up to the mountain hut.

From here, take the path to the right. This continues upwards and the trees begin to thin. Don’t miss the viewpoing along a little spur to your right. You’ll soon be able to see Koča na Golici above. When you leave the forest, you’ll reach a path that contours along the hillside. Turn left and follow it beneath the hut, then take the path to the right that leads directly to the building.
Hiking to Golica Peak

There are beautiful views from the hut and it’s a great place to have a break. The top of Golica Peak is not too far away now, and then it’s mainly all downhill. When you’ve had a rest, take the path leading up towards the top of the ridge. There are two options here, but the left-hand path is the slightly more main one, so take this. It zigzags upwards and eventually you’ll be on the ridge and able to see over to the other side in Austria.

You’ll return here, but to reach Golica Peak, hike to the left along the relatively flat ridge. In a short distance you’ll be at the peak itself. It can be windy on the ridge, so you may not want to stay here too long! But admire the 360-degree views and note you’re right on the border between Slovenia and Austria.
Walking Back Down

Return the way you came, then instead of heading down to the hut, continue along the path that roughly follows the top of the ridge. This path leads gradually downwards, through lots of daffodils when they’re flowering. After the second hill, the path heads more steeply down and reaches a track. From here, follow the track downwards, but look out for the hiking path on the right at the bend.
Follow this track down through the forest, crossing another track just after a meadow. You’ll soon come to another track junction. Here, take the track opposite which leads you back to the car park where you started. This is the endof the Golcia Peak Hike.
