Koper Walking Tour Route
Directions: From Sladoledarna the ice cream shop, walk around the building to enter the market from the other side.
1. Koper Market
Koper Market is a covered market selling all kinds of food. It’s definitely worth a walk around. The produce, such as fruit, vegetables and fish, is good value and there’s a wide variety of each.
Directions: Head towards the waterfront, going via the small park.
2. Koper Waterfront

Koper Waterfront is a lovely place to walk along the edge of the water. You can see all kinds of boats, plus views over the Gulf of Trieste.
Directions: Head right along the waterfront promenade, and try to keep to the water’s edge. The next stop is just across the road on the right, behind the building with the arches.
3. Carpaccio Square

Carpaccio Square is a peaceful square near the shoreline. The historic Taverna forms one side of the square. This arched stone building was a former storage area for the port and now hosts events.
Directions: Cross back over to the waterfront and continue along the promenade, following the seafront.
4. Koper Beach
Koper Beach is close to the centre of Koper, and while it’s next to the port, the water is relatively clean and people do swim here. Behind the beach, there’s a grassy area for sunbathing and children’s playgrounds.
Directions: Head to the road behind the beach and turn left. Take the steps to the right up the embankment, then left at the top to the viewpoint. Turn right down the pedestrianised road behind the viewpoint.
5. Tito Square

Tito Square is the main square in the centre of Koper, and a must-see. It’s surrounded by historic buildings as mentioned below:
The Cathedral is free to enter, while the neighbouring bell-tower costs a few euros per person. After climbing roughly 200 steps, you get a great view over Koper and the surrounding coastline.

The Loggia is an upmarket cafe location in a medieval building with great views of Tito Square.
The Praetorian Palace was built in the 13th century, though its current architecture is from the 15th century, with a Venetian-Gothic style. Today it houses the tourist information, the mayor’s office, and various other administrative functions. There’s also an antique pharmacy on the ground floor that’s open for visitors.
Directions: Walk a short distance down the road opposite the cathedral entrance. The museum is in a nice building on your left.
6. Koper Regional Museum

Key Information: Open Tue-Sun, 9am-12:30 and 1-5pm. Tickets cost €9/4.5/14 per adult/child/family.
Koper Regional Museum is a very interesting museum with several exhibits over several floors. There are many artefacts and they explain the history of the region, including the First World War to the present. There’s an audioguide in English/Italian/Slovenian.
Directions: Return to Tito Square, then take a right on the narrow road through the Praetorian Palace. Follow this cute street all the way to a T-junction. Turn left, and you’ll reach the square behind the Muda Gate.
7. Muda Gate

Muda Gate is the only surviving city gate, and dates from the 16th century. It used to be one of the main entrances through Koper’s large fortified walls. Today, the old town is enclosed within the area that used to be inside the walls, but has expanded greatly with modern buildings outside the former walled area.
Directions: This is the end of the Koper Walking Tour. From here, continue exploring Koper, or return straight to the start of the walking tour by heading through the gate and turning right along the road.
