This out-and-back hike up Logar Valley is quite easy but has great views of the dramatic surrounding mountains and ends at a high waterfall.

Location

This hike starts from a small car park near the beginning of Logar Valley. It’s 1hr30 drive from Ljubljana, and rather more difficult, though possible to reach via public transport.

Tips

  • Entrance to Logar Valley for cars is €10 (from April to September). If you arrive very early, you will pay on the way out rather than the way in.
  • Logar Valley is a popular hiking area and can get busy on sunny summer days, so arrive early.
  • You can actually park at the far end of the valley, from which it’s about 10 minutes walk to the waterfall. However, you miss out on walking through the rest of the valley!
  • There are several chalets/restaurants scattered along the valley floor for food and drink.
  • Afterwards, you can drive along the Solčava Panoramic Road (unpaved and quite narrow in places), or walk up the neighbouring Robanov Kot Valley.
  • You can extend the hike by walking to a viewpoint at the top of the waterfall (120 metres of extra climb), or hiking even further to Frischauf Lodge Mountain Hut (280 metres of extra climb).
  • For another great walk nearby, check out Velika Planina. Slightly further away, Golica Peak is a relatively easy Alpine Peak Walk.

From the small car park, walk across the bridge to the right, the way you came in. On the other side of the road, take the track to the left. Almost immediately, take the path to the right over the small wooden bridge and follow it along the small stream.

The path continues through the woods, then along the edge of a lovely meadow. Follow the path as it heads onwards. After a while, you’ll cross the paved road, then reach the road again at Dom Planincev. This is a nice restaurant with well-priced Slovenian food and outdoor seating if you already want a break.

From here, the hiking trail continues on a track behind some fields. Note that this part of the trail was closed in 2025, with an unspecified reopening date. If it’s closed, you can simply walk along the road for the next roughly 1 km until you meet the hiking path again.

Either way, the trail continues from the road to Planšarija Logarski Kot, a small restaurant serving food and drink. Just in front of the building, the hiking path leads to the right. You’ll then meet the road again and find the hiking trail a few metres further up. There’s a short stretch through the woods before crossing the road again.

Along this section, look out for the wooden bridge across the river to the right. Take this, and you’ll reach the final car park at the end of the Logar Valley road. There’s a little bar/cafe here for refreshments.

Rinka Waterfall (Slap Rinka)

At the far end of the car park are some wooden steps at the start of the hike to Rinka Waterfall. It’s about 500 metres with 90 metres of climb to the viewpoint at the base of the waterfall. There’s a slightly precariously placed little cafe here with great views of the waterfall and surrounding mountains.

If you want to extend the walk, it’s an extra 120 metres climb to the top of the waterfall, and along the way are some fantastic views. To hike even further, you can reach Freichauf Lodge Mountain Hut with 280 metres extra climb from the base of Rinka Waterfall. Note that both these options are quite steep and along rough, rocky paths.

When you’re ready, return the way you came. There aren’t really any deviations you can take to make the route different, apart from if you want to walk along the road. It is quite a lot quicker on the return route though, as it’s downhill and you’re facing away from the most dramatic mountains.

  2. Walk up the neighbouring Robanov Kot Valley. You can walk roughly 3.5 km up this valley to a lovely meadow with great views of the mountains that surround the valley.
