Hiking along Nanos Plateau up to the Peak

The hike up Nanos Peak has really great views, a hut at the top, and a very steep way down before walking along lovely countryside roads.

Location

This hike starts from a car park next to the highway between Ljubljana and the Slovenian Coast. It’s almost 1 hour’s drive from Ljubljana, or you can take a bus directly to the nearby Razdrto Village and walk 5 minutes extra from there.

Tips

Nanos Peak Hiking Route

 Nanos Plateau
Walking up Nanos Plateau through the woods

From the car park, cross over the highway and turn left on the track. In a short distance, take the first path to the right, following the hiking signposts. The climb begins fairly steeply and leads up through a field before heading into shady woodland.

The path begins to turn left and flatten out. Here you’ll find a few junctions with other paths that lead more steeply up to Nanos Peak. These paths are slightly more difficult than the one recommended here, and miss out on walking along Nanos Plateau.

Head onwards, gently upwards, and through an open clearing. The path gradually becomes steeper, and then even steeper, with a few easy rock steps to climb. Eventually, you’ll reach the open land near the top of Nanos Plateau.

You now get great views of the valley below and other mountains in the distance. The path is really beautiful. At the first junction, take the first right to walk gently upwards along the edge of the plateau.

Soon, the infrastructure at the top of Nanos Peak will come into view – there’s a typical tower covered in satellite dishes. After admiring the views at the top, head left and slightly downwards into the woods to reach a mountain hut (open May-Sept, Wed-Sun and nice weekends the rest of the year). The hut serves drinks and food at reasonable prices.

When you’re ready, leave the hut the way you came, but stick to the path to the left. At the corner of the woods, the path leads very steeply downwards. It then continues along the edge of the woods, then back into the woods again, where the path gets slightly less steep.

The path seems to head downhill for a very long time. Eventually, you’ll reach a fairly flat track at the bottom. Turn right and you’ll soon enter the cute little village of Veliko Ubeljsko. In the centre, turn right before the church to walk along a road that leads through countryside fields.

After 2 km walking along the road, you’ll reach the highway, with the car park to your left. If you’re lucky, there might be a coffee truck at the junction here! This is the end of the Nanos Peak Hike.
