This short yet varied hike heads along the top of Strunjan Cliffs, through fruit orchards, and back through the salt lagoon nature reserve.
Strunjan Cliffs Hike Hiking Map
Location
This hike starts from a car park (EasyPark or coins – no card) on the edge of Strunjan Lagoon. This car park is also very close to Strunjan Beach, so you can grab beach stuff after the hike to relax on the sand. Note, on sunny summer days, the car park fills up early. It’s 15 minutes drive from Piran, or there’s a regular bus from Piran to Strunjan, which also takes 15 minutes. From the bus stop in Strunjan it’s about 400 metres walk until you can join this hiking trail.
Tips
- This walk is an official themed trail, but the signage isn’t great, so it’s best to follow this guide and have an offline maps app on your phone, such as Organic Maps.
- Stay at the luxury Hotel Svoboda* at the start of this hike, or find nearby accommodation in Piran*.
- You can go to Strunjan Beach near the car park, or the beach by the famous cliffs – this is roughly 1 km along the hike and involves a fairly steep descent and then ascent back up to the trail.
- After the hike, why not explore the nearby towns of Piran or Koper?

Strunjan Cliffs Hiking Route

From the car park by the lagoon, head across the road and find a paved trail through the park on the other side. Walk along this trail and you’ll soon be at the front of Hotel Svoboda*, a luxury hotel. Follow the trail as it bends right, then turn left through the car park and left again slightly uphill.
At the bend in the road, turn left along the track through the orchards. At the second corner, take the hiking path to the left. The route is simpler from here as you just follow this small path along the clifftops.
Strunjan Cliffs

There are several viewpoints and the cliffs keep getting better until you reach the most famous viewpoint of Strunjan Cliffs in Half Moon Bay. If you’re interested, you can also walk down the steps to the beach itself. It’s a really lovely beach with great views, but there is quite a bit of climb to get back up to the hiking trail!
Continue along the clifftop path and it soon bends right, away from the cliffs and through lovely fruit orchards. Keep walking on the track and now views of Trieste in Italy come into sight. In a little while, the track bends to the right to reach a small paved road. There are some benches here, and it’s the far point of this walk, so enjoy the views.

Turn right along the paved road, then take the second road to the left between the grapes and olive trees. Keep following this small road, then turn left a the T-junction, heading downhill. At the next T-junction, turn right, then take the first left. At the following T-junction, take a left to reach the road along the edge of the lagoon.
The Salt Lagoon

Turn right here, then take the first left along the path leading through the lagoon. This is an area of salt flats that were previously harvested for their salt. Now it’s mainly a nature reserve, and if you’re lucky, you can see waders and many other birds.
Soon you’ll reach a small, free museum in a former salt works house. After this, take a right over the small bridge, past a little cafe, and to the seafront of Strunjan Beach. Walk along the promenade, then head right to the car park and the end of the Strunjan Cliffs Hike.
