Visiting Predjama Castle is a great thing to do in Slovenia, and it’s very close to Postojna Cave, another of Slovenia’s top attractions.

How do you get to Predjama Castle?
You have a few options to reach Predjama Castle.
Driving
You can easily drive to Predjama Castle – it’s roughly 1 hour from Ljubljana and only 15 minutes from Postojna Cave. There are several small car parks near the castle, and officials direct you to one of these. It’s €6 to park (for the day), and you have to pay the parking officials in cash.
Public Transport
The only way to reach Predjama Castle by public transport is by using the Shuttle Bus between Postojna Cave and the Castle. This shuttle only runs in summer – see the website for a timetable. For details on getting to the caves via public transport, see below:
You can get a direct train from Ljubljana to Postojna, taking 1hr20. From Postojna train station, it’s then a 25-minute walk to the cave entrance. Trains depart every 20 minutes.
Alternatively, you can take a direct bus, which is a bit quicker – 50 minutes from Ljubljana to Postojna. The bus stop in Postojna is also slightly nearer the caves, roughly 20 minutes walk away. Buses depart every 25 minutes.
Guided Tour
A guided tour from Ljubljana to Predjama Castle and nearby Postojna Cave* is a very easy way to visit two of the top sights in Slovenia. There are several pickup points in Ljubljana and you can choose from either a morning or afternoon tour. The cost of the tour includes entrance to both sites; the only thing it doesn’t include is food and drink.

Tips
- Both the castle and the caves can get very busy in the summer holidays. Since the cave tours are limited in size, but the castle doesn’t limit visitor numbers, it’s best to visit the castle first, as early as possible. This way, the castle will be less crowded, while the caves have a similar level of business the entire day.
- See our Postojna Cave Guide for more details on how to visit the cave.

Visiting Predjama Castle
Predjama Castle is the largest ‘cave castle’ and was built in the 12th century, though originally its form was much simpler than today. In the 15th century, the famous bandit Erazem Lueger hid out in the castle, from which he went out on skirmishes to rob the rich (a bit like Robin Hood).

He killed a relative of the Habsburgs, and for this, they besieged his castle. However, Erazem used the secret cave tunnels beneath the castle to supply the castle with goods even while under siege.
When visiting the castle, you can opt for an audioguide (€2.90) or download the Predjama Castle App for free, which includes the same information. There are then numbered stops around the castle where you can listen to audioclips.

Note that there are a few sections of steep steps in the castle and it can be a little awkward to pass people walking in the opposite direction! Don’t visit if you’re not happy squeezing up these steep staircases.
Tickets to Predjama Castle
Most people visit Predjama Castle in combination with Postojna Cave. If you want to visit only Predjama Castle, tickets cost €21 per adult. It’s better value to get the combination ticket with Postojna Cave, for which there are a couple of different options:
It’s €46.50 for the castle plus basic cave ticket, or €56.50 for the castle, the basic cave ticket, the Vivarium and Expo Cave Karst exhibition.
With your ticket, you can visit Predjama Castle at any time, but you have to select a specific tour time for Postojna Cave. Tour times vary throughout the year; see the official website for more details and note you should arrive at the cave car park at least 30 minutes before your tour time.
If you’re buying tickets at the Castle, get them at the ticket office, not the castle itself (else you’ll have to walk back….).
