The walk up Hesselberg is a lovely stroll up the highest hill in this region of Germany, so there are great views from the top.

Location

This walk up Hesselberg Hill starts from the Parkplatz Geologischer Lehrpfad (car park for the Geological Trail), just north of Wittelshofen village in Bavaria.

From the car park, head up the path on the right when looking at Hesselberg Hill. This path leads upwards next to the car park and up to a small lane. Turn right and then almost immediately left up through a field by some trees.

The route turns right just before the wood and you come to a T-junction. Turn left here and up into the forest. You’ll pass a few signs on the geology trail, and can see an exposure of different rocks halfway up the wood.

At the clearing at the top, the path leads right and back into the trees. After some gentle uphill, you’ll walk out into the main cleared area at the top of Hesselberg Hill. There are already some great views from here as well as a scenic bench. There are quite a few paths, it doesn’t really matter which you take as long as you stick to the top and keep heading toward the tall red-and-white pylon.

Just behind the pylon is a cross, marking the highest point of Hesselberg Hill, at 689 metres. Enjoy the views before heading onwards and a little downwards to the car park. There’s a little kiosk here open on weekends in summer, and a youth camp to your left. Continue up the other side of the car park to the top of the hill. There are more lovely views from here.

Head onwards and keep on the path at the edge of the top plateau. Shortly before you reach the woodland on the other side of the open area, there’s a path junction. Take a right here, heading downhill and along a path lined by linden trees. Keep along the main path, which heads through the open and then follows the border by the forest.

After a while, you’ll reach the car park of an Evangelical Retreat, which you can see to the left. At the small road, turn left and follow it as it bends right. At the next corner, take the track to the right and follow this through the fields back to your car and the end of the Hesselberg Hill Walk.
