Location

This out-and-back hike to the top of Monte Crot starts at the Staulanza pass, 15 min drive from the town of Selva di Cadore in the Belluno part of the Dolomites. There is a free car park, just across from the Rifugio Passo Staulanza.

Tips

  • Most of the route is a steady and sometimes steep uphill walk, except for the last section where there is a small bit of scrambling.
  • Alternatively, if you have steady legs and are up for it, do this hike as a run. That is what I did.

Monte Crot Hiking Route

Facing the hotel, take the ascending path to the left. First the path climbs gradually along the mountainside, before you hit a couple of larger switchbacks. There are some good views of the valley below on this part of the climb.

After some time you will reach a split in the path, where you take the right hand path. Here the hike steepens for short stretch. After it becomes less steep, you get the first views of Monte Crot. The route toward the peak is obvious from this point and soon you will reach the saddle between Monte Crot and Monte Crot Anticima Sud, the southern peak. Enjoy the views of Monte Pelmo because they are best from here.

To get to the top, there is a short stretch where you have to use your hands a little to make your way up the rocky slope. Then the final meters to the top are easy. Have a rest, enjoy the views of the valley below and return the way you came.
